This book isn't new, (February 2010), but it's so fun, it's worthy of a review!
From the Jacket:
Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth, and what follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly. This coming-of-age true story is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever been in middle school, and especially those who have ever had a bit of their own dental drama.
From Mrs. Coyle,
I won't tell you my age, but having grown up in the same time frame as the author, I can relate to the culture at the time, including the fashion. It doesn't matter what age you are, though, because this book is really popular here. Both my daughter and Ms. Weber's daughter, who are in middle school loved this book, and recommended it to us to read. It's in graphic novel format, but I think it has way more "writing" in it, or the graphics just convey the story really well, because it had more of a novel feel to it.
